This educational pavilion was commissioned by the Plainfield School District as a shelter at one of the largest school-owned forests in the state. The intent was to provide a structure which would be in harmony with the environment and provide a viewing position to study the surrounding tree canopy.
The structure was Conceived as an economical shed enveloped by a masonry structure that supports a large wooden observation deck and access stairway. The covered pavilion provides security and protection for students at the forest during inclimate weather, while the deck allows for nature observation and education from a unique viewpoint, at the level of the tree canopy. This economical structure transcends it's utilitarian methods with a dramatic response to the program. |
